If your pet loves to come along on your adventures, boating can be an exciting outing. The fresh air and stimulation are good for animals — as long as they're comfortable around water. Before you set sail, take a few precautions to protect your pet and ensure a safe, fun experience for everyone on the boat. Need more tips for boating with pets? 1. Do a Test Run

Every animal is different; some pets are comfortable on boats, while others are terrified. If you've never been on the water with your four-legged friend, do a test run. When the boat is still on its trailer, take your pet on board. Encourage exploration, and allow plenty of time to get used to the new sights and smells. Do the same when the boat is moored at a dock. By introducing your pet to the boat gradually, you can create a smoother transition to water adventures.

2. Plan for Water Safety

When you're on the water, there's a chance that your pet will jump or fall overboard. Think through this scenario before you leave the dock, and come up with a game plan. At a minimum, let the captain know to stop the motor right away, and decide who will rescue the animal. If your pet isn't a strong swimmer, or if you're planning to boat in rough seas, it's a good idea to put on a properly sized animal life jacket for every journey.

3. Stock Up on Food and Water

There are few opportunities to stop for pet food or drinkable water when you're on a boat trip — you'll need to bring it with you. Water is particularly important; the extended sun exposure can dehydrate your pet. Be sure to keep extra on hand for emergencies.

4. Protect Your Pet With Boat-Friendly Supplies

Just like humans, pets can be affected by the sun and sea. Seasickness is a top concern, particularly if your pet struggles with road trips. Plan ahead by bringing a pet-friendly motion-sickness medication; call your vet for recommendations. Don't forget about the sun — bring sunscreen, and make sure to create a cool, shaded place for your pet to relax. Make sure to pack a first aid kit with supplies for dehydration, illness, and injury.

When you're prepared, boating with your pet can be a wonderful experience. You'll both enjoy the fresh air and sunshine; you might even make friends with other pet-loving boaters.
