Ideally, the water you boat in will always be calm and placid, but you know that won’t always be the case. Even on a good day, the water can be choppy, especially out on the open ocean or a large lake. Knowing how to deal with rough conditions can keep you and your passengers safe. Here’s what to do.

Pack Safety Gear

Everyone on your boat should always be wearing a life jacket, also known as a PFD or personal flotation device, so that they can stay afloat if they fall overboard due to the boat’s instability. You’ll also want to have a throwable life ring on a rope so you can rescue people quickly.

Keep an Eye on the Weather

Even if you look at the forecast before you head out, the conditions on the water can change quickly, especially if you’re out on the Atlantic. Bring a radio or use your phone to look up the NOAA’s forecast for the waterway you’re in and be prepared to head back to shore if a storm is brewing nearby. While you can handle some wind and choppy water on your boat, you don’t want to risk getting in trouble by cruising right into a heavy thunderstorm.

Slow Down & Remain Vigilant

Don’t try to speed through choppy water or high winds. Instead, reduce your boat’s speed and carefully watch the way ahead so that you’re ready to react to a swell or an obstacle as necessary. Turn on your boat’s lights if it becomes overcast so that other boats can see you.
