While some folks may choose to put their boats into storage over the fall and winter, you don’t have to join them. If you take some time to prepare yourself and your boat, you can successfully go on boat trips on a chilly day. Here is what you’ll need to do to ensure that you and your passengers are ready for a day out on the water in cold weather.

Check the Forecast

Before you cement your plans and hitch your boat trailer up to your truck, it’s a good idea to check the forecast for the area you intend to boat in. If the temperatures are significantly below freezing, or if high winds or heavy precipitation is on the forecast, you may need to delay your boat trip.

Layer Up

Dressing in layers is the way to go when you’re boating during the fall and winter. Begin with a base layer of thermal underwear or leggings and a long-sleeved shirt, then add light sweaters and jeans or pants, along with thick socks, your coat, and a scarf and hat to stay cozy. You can always add or remove layers if you get too cold or too warm. Bring some blankets with you, too.

Have Food & Water

Staying hydrated and fed will help you better cope with the cold. Bring some thermoses of water, tea, and coffee with you, along with some high-protein snacks to keep your energy up. You don’t want to be out on the water for hours with nothing to eat or drink, since this will reduce your ability to keep warm.
