Service the Engine

Every year take your boat's engine to get served through a professional mechanic. Check to ensure that they change the oil and flush the cooling system. In addition, inspect any hardware like belts and hoses to see if they need replacement. While you are servicing the engine, run through all of your electronics equipment. Charting systems, radios, and other machines may need repairs or tuning and consider replacing outdated electronics.

Hull Inspection

You should not put your boat in the water until you complete a thorough inspection of its hull. Look out for any markings that can indicate more serious issues. Chips, cracks, color changes, and blistering can eventually compromise the structural integrity.

Refresh the Interior

Clean all of the interior surfaces on your boat to keep it looking good. Regular cleaning will prevent the build-up of rust and mold on tables, chairs, and other aspects of the interior. After scrubbing your interior, look over the boat cover and seats. Repair any tears and cracks before they develop mildew.

Double-Check Safety Equipment

Your safety equipment is vital for the well-being of you and anyone else you bring on board. Check that all of your equipment is accounted for and working well. For example, flares and emergency beacons may need to be replaced if they have expired. Worn life jackets need replacement, too. Access to up-to-date safety equipment can make a huge difference during an emergency.

Official Documents

Always make sure you have your license, registration, and insurance information on board. You do not want to be caught without these important documents.
